"Roman Women I" was made during an artist's residency in Rome in 2013. Like much of Sara VanDerBeek's work, the photograph navigates historical terrain while also engaging the present. Using only the ambient light of the museum to illuminate the ancient female figure's bust, the artist recalls the transitional light of the early evening, symbolically a time of change. The strong pinks and blues are achieved by omitting yellow from her photo process and are a nod to the original bright pigments used to paint the sculpture when it was first made.
