"Roman Women I" was made during an artist's residency in Rome in 2013. Like much of Sara VanDerBeek's work, ​the photograph ​navigates historical terrain ​while also ​​engaging the present. Using only the ambient light of the museum to illuminate the ancient female​ figure's bust, the artist recalls the transitional light of the early evening​, symbolically a time of change. The strong pinks and blues are achieved by omitting yellow from her photo process ​and ​are a nod to the original bright pigments used to paint the sculpture when it was first made.
